Speaker bios:
Matias Milet advises on Canadian tax issues associated with cross-border business ventures and transactions, investment funds, and pension funds. He frequently advises clients on digital asset transactions and structuring, and international tax information reporting.
Alim Khamisa leads Product Management at DELV (formerly Element Finance), an R&D company focused on DeFi infrastructure and protocol development including Council, Element, and now Hyperdrive. In 2018, he worked with a team to launch one of Canada’s first industrial-scale crypto-mining ventures from inception through to a public listing on the TSXV and subsequent acquisition. He previously taught in the Blockchain Development Program at George Brown College in Toronto and currently sits on the Program Advisory Committee. Additionally, on the academic front, he authored a chapter titled ‘Token Economies’ in The Emerald Handbook of Blockchain for Business (published March 2021) which focuses on cryptoeconomics and token engineering. Alim is a co-founder of the DeFi Toronto meetup, which has been running since 2019. He holds a Master of Business, Entrepreneurship and Technology (MBET) from the University of Waterloo and is a designated CPA.
Victor Li is an economist, investment researcher, and educator. He has been active in the crypto asset space since 2014. Victor is a co-founder of DeFi Toronto, a 2,800-member community group that advocates Decentralized Finance (DeFi) as a use case of public blockchains. In 2020, he and his team won first prize from Aave during EthGlobal’s DeFi hackathon. Victor undertakes crypto asset research at Firinne Capital and teaches a blockchain course at York University. He is also a curriculum advisor to George Brown College’s post-graduate blockchain certificate program. Victor has over 20 years of experience in investment research and portfolio management. Victor has a master’s degree in applied economics from the University of Victoria and is a CFA charterholder.
Book Author’s Bio:
Ari Juels is the Weill Family Foundation and Joan and Sanford I. Weill Professor in the Jacobs Technion-Cornell Institute at Cornell Tech and a Computer Science faculty member at Cornell University. He is a Co-Director of the Initiative for CryptoCurrencies and Contracts (IC3). He is also the Chief Scientist at Chainlink Labs. He is the author of the crypto thriller novel The Oracle (Talos Press). He was the Chief Scientist of RSA, Director of RSA Laboratories, and a Distinguished Engineer at EMC (now Dell EMC), where he worked until 2013. He received his Ph.D. in computer science from U.C. Berkeley. His recent areas of interest include blockchains, cryptocurrency, and smart contracts, as well as applied cryptography, user authentication, and privacy.
